2021 Travelers Championship Sleeper Picks

Travelers Championship Sleeper PicksFresh off last week’s US Open, the PGA Tour lands in Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. Even though last week was a golf major, the field of golfers for the Travelers is pretty solid and finding sleeper picks may be a bit easier since the top names will be the higher priced players for salary cap lineups.

The Travelers Championship is once again played on a Pete Dye course – the TPC River Highlands which is a smaller course at 6,841 yards and only a par 70. Unlike last week this course does give up a lot of birdies (ranked in the top 4 on PGA Tour for Birdie rate) so you will see guys scoring points for your DFS lineups.

Both long and short hitters have won the Travelers so don’t focus too much on the big hitters this week as opposed to finding the ball strikers that can hit it straight and set themselves up for a great second shot.

Travelers Championship Golf Course

TPC River Highlands par 70 - 6,841 yards

The short answer for success at the Travelers Championship is hitting it long and straight and then putt well to score birdies.

Because this is a par 70 course one of the most important stats to pay attention to this week will be Par 4 scoring. Most previous winners have either led or were top 5 in Par 4 scoring at TPC River Highlands. This is a ball striker course with guys clubbing down from the driver and focussing on the irons. This is a forgiving course with wider fairways so that second shot is the set up for a birdie try.

Greens in regulation is another key stat to use in finding sleeper picks for the Travelers Championship because that second shot on the green is the key to having a birdie try or making par. Look at the Par Breakers stats which is a combination of Birdies and Eagles. To win guys will have to make a lot of them this week. Double digit scores are the norm at the Travelers so you need to pick guys that can score and take advantage of their shots.

The greens at TPC Highlands are poa annua grass and used to be really slow but were sped up the last few years and now the better putters on the PGA Tour seem to rise to the top of the leaderboard. The winner this week will be at the top or near the top for putting stats like putting average, total putting and strokes gained putting.

Remember, this is a Pete Dye course and there is trouble around the greens which can leave an ugly number on the scorecard so finding the guys that can hit the greens will be key. Look for guys that can Scramble since they will get into trouble and those that can scramble out will have the most success this week.

We have mentioned throughout the year that there are some guys that play really well on Pete Dye courses and some that always seem befuddled. It doesn’t hurt to look back and see what guys played well this year on the Dye courses and how much of a sleeper pick they are based on their salary cap costs.

Although hitting it long isn’t necessary, it also doesn’t hurt. Look at Fairway accuracy and Strokes Gained Off the tee for this week. Having a short wedge for a second shot into the green will make scoring easier for guys this week.
