2017 Masters Punt Plays and Masters Underdog Picks

With the 2017 Masters just a week away it’s time to prepare your daily fantasy golf strategy for this year’s event.

If you are playing in big GPPs like this Monster Millionaire Contest, you are very likely going to need some Masters punt plays or Masters underdog picks to come through to win the big money.

My favorite roster construction is a "Stars and Scrubs" lineup mix where you build around some studs like a Jordan Spieth or Dustin Johnson who come at a sky high price. That is where our Masters value picks below come into to play - you will have to find some low-owned cheap longshot picks to meet the salary cap restrictions in a game like FanDuel's $750K Golden Eagle for just a $4 entry fee.

Top Five Masters Punt Plays or Masters Value Picks

Soren Kjeldsen

Soren comes into the 2017 Masters having made 3 straight cuts, which is good. The bad, however, is that prior to that he was god awful missing the cut in 4 straight tournaments. So, which Kjeldsen is going to show up at Augusta is the question I’m left pondering? His history at the Masters is decent having finished 7th last year and 30th way back in 2010. His salary is dirt cheap, so if you need a Masters punt play who at least proved he can compete at Augusta, he may be your man.

Charley Hoffman

Hoffman is not a bare minimum type of punt play, but I do think he will be low owned at a fair price. He’s having an up and down year alternating missing the cut and top 10 finishes. He will need to improve his GIR (Greens in Regulation) for the 2017 Masters to have a shot, but I think he’s a great fit to differentiate your lineup. His past history at the Masters includes a 29th place finish in 2016 and a 9th place finish in 2015.

Angel Cabrera

Angel may be the ultimate punt play every year at the Masters and the old guy is still going strong. I mean technically not going strong on the tour, as he has missed cut after cut this year, but every time I dismiss him as a Masters play he tends to comes through. Last year he finished 24th, the year before that...22nd. In fact, his last 7 times at Augusta, he has only missed the cut once. Now, father time will eventually catch up to him at some point, but at a dirt cheap price...if he makes the cut again in 2017 and allows you to roster a couple studs, you should certainly take it.

Tommy Fleetwood

Fleetwood will be playing in his first Masters this year, and the stats tell us that is not a good thing. Course history is a big factor, so it’s always nerve racking rostering any rookie players at Augusta. That being said, it’s not like rookie players don’t finish well they - just never win. Fleetwood is a nice bargain considering how well he has been playing lately including 3 straight top 15 finishes. He plays mostly overseas, so many people will overlook him for more familiar names. He has the distance and the accuracy to do well here and I’m going to take a couple shots with him for sure.

Bernd Wiesberger

There is not much to dislike about the consistent Austrian. The guy never misses a cut, granted the majority of his events are on the European Tour...but that makes me even more bullish on him due to the fact many will overlook him. He has two years of Masters play under his belt and finished 22nd in 2015 and 34th in 2016. I can see a sneaky top 15 finish this year and I expect him to be really low owned across all of the Top Fantasy Golf Sites. He’s one of those guys that if he comes through with a masterful performance, he will win you big money.
