2020 Safeway Open Sleeper Picks

Safeway Open Sleeper PicksThe new PGA Tour season begins! Although the FedEx Cup playoffs just ended the new 2020/2021 PGA Tour season begins.

As we mention in our Safeway Open Preview page, this is a bit of a weak field since most of the top PGA Tour players sit out with the US Open being played next week, and especially since the last season just ended last week. The biggest name in the field this week is Phil Mickelson but a few more will commit on the final Friday.

We have some of our Safeway Open Sleeper picks that you can use for either fantasy golf or make a bet with but if you want some true expert picks that you can count on go to GolfStats.com and use their picks.

The Golf Course

Silverado Country Club in Napa, California

Silverado is a Par 72, and is 7,166 yards in length. The fairways at Silverado are pretty narrow and tree lined making it a tougher play if you miss the fairway and hit the rough. Players will find water on a few holes and there are some deep fairway bunkers to avoid or face a bogey putt. Because the course isn’t very long, being accurate is more important than having long distance off the tee. The putting greens are set up around an 11 on the Stimpmeter on a PoaAnnua surface which makes the green fairly good for putts.

The course allows for a good opportunity for scoring as all of the winners on the Silverado course have shot at least -15 over the four days. As a Par 72 course it has four par fives which play as the easiest four holes throughout the tournament. Find golfers who rank high in greens in regulation (GIR) and Par 5 scoring.

Being accurate off the tee is important at Silverado but the second shot in the key so strong iron players and shot makers will have a great week at the Safeway Open.

2020 Safeway Open Sleeper Picks For Bettors and Fantasy Golf

Emiliano Grillo - Grillo won his first and only PGA Tour event at the Silverado course and he's had mediocre results since then. So why is Grillo a sleeper pick for the Safeway Open? He finished the year off OK and in a weak field and plenty of course history I like Grillo to rebound from the last few bad years and to start the new PGA Tour season strong.

Aaron Baddeley - Baddeley makes a career of barely hanging on to his PGA Tour card and because of that he has great experience playing in weaker field tournaments like the Safeway Open. He finished in 4th at Silverrado a couple of years ago and as mentioned has played there quite often. I would never tell you to pick Baddeley as a playing that can outright win the Safeway Open, but as a fantasy golf pick this week he is a low cost guy that should make the cut and play the weekend.
